Origins of the Modern English Accent, Hanover?

I recall having read the same thing myself, I think it was in John Ramsden's "Don't mention the war", a most interesting book. Accents evolve principally through imitation of peers and high status individuals, so the hypothesis does hold water. I think it would be difficult to prove it, but I would go along with that theory.
