Is it acceptable to send the US military to other countries for the purpose of liberating the oppressed?

People join the US military to help defend the USA, is it acceptable for the US MIlitary to be used not for US defense but instead to be used to liberate various countries thoughtout the world? even if this results in the death of hundreds of US soldiers? Does the president have a responsibilty to use the military for it's intended purpose?
