What happens when things turn radioactive?

Be more specific in what you are asking. Things don't just turn radio active. If you are referring to a nuclear power plant, the fuel they use is already radio active when it is mined. We just use the radiation to heat water, turn it to steam, and turn steam turbines that turn generators.
