In the Scarlet Letter...how would you describe how Hester appeared?

Long "sable" or dark gleaming hair is her charicteristic feature in the begining, as well as her noble heritage, as time goes by, she described as pale ghost-like figure who's outwardly conforming to the puritan custom by her simple clothes and covered hair. remember, only her A and pearl are adorned with embroidery.
